Freedom of speech online? Not really...

"I disapprove of what you say
but I will defend to death the right for you to say it"

~Francois Voltarie~

Nowadays, the internet is really a haven for everyone to express their view, critics, argue, petition and complain. From online forum to IRC, ICQ to the now popular avenue of blogging. Looks like the internet is the ideal place for Freedom Of Speech (or words). Well, Internet have no boundaries unless you consider any place beyond the earth as boundaries, and internet is INTERNATIONAL so it seems that there is no law bounding it. It seem like you can say whatever you like, anyone you want, anything you can. Well, sadly Freedom Of Speech is not so much of a freedom after all, especially considering the long arms of the Singapore Law.

Recently there have been much outcry regarding a blog which belong to a friend of mine. His blog have always been contriversial and also very very "straight from his mind" type. In fact nothing is holding my dear friend back from putting his thoughts and views and complains in words, online. I really applaud him for being different and being really frank and straightforward in his blog, in fact the blog was really interesting but a recent blog of his seems to have cross the line abit. I shall not go into the detail of the blog but the his content seems to have offended someone who was viewing his blog and possibly alienating others.

Right now, I would like to advice readers and fellow bloggers that YOU have the right to the ownership of your blog and you have the right to pen down what ever you like in short you have freedom of speech. However there is always a limit, just like the 16years old limit and the speed limit, write within your own rights but never never be intrusive especially doing personnal attack. Don't play circus and walk along the rope, you never know if you will unwittily fall into the arms of the law. The law of Singapore is very frightening and a wrong sentence can send 2 or 3 charges against you.....
