Of Sports and Politics

1. Saw SM Goh Chok Tong on TV telling residents in Opposition wards to vote carefully. The usual carrots of ward upgrading was use to entice more votes for the ruling party PAP. Sigh, can PAP be more creative and campagin for things more than HDB upgrades? Elderly Employment, Health Benefits, Education sponsorship something close to the heart of residents. Looks like PAP only rely on upgrading of HDB flat as poll-pullers. I am sure our former Prime Minister could come out with something better than that, right?

2. Our table tennis team totally dominated the commonwealth games! Lets just for a moment put aside the facts that they were originally born in China and was a Communist China's Chineses. Taking the Gold, Silver and Bronze medal for single and doubles truly make our presense felt in the commonwealth games. At less our table tennis team are make up of Singaporeans who have good morality and ethnic as compared to Agu Casmir and Itimi Dickson, two former Nigerians who are now Singaporean playing for the LIONS, our national soccer team...took tax payers money and almost run away to Russia.

Lonely Ah Pek and the China Women

Few days ago, I chances upon an article in the Chinese newspaper about the tragic affair between a Singaporean Ah Pek and his newly wed Wife from China. Ah pek apparently met this China women while drinking at a Kopi shop. China women was extremely friendly with Ah Pek, nice affectional chat and the sudden proposal of Marriage which caught Ah Pek by surprise. Ah pek was of course a bit suspicious but decided to go "steady" with this China Women for a few months to learn if she is the one and of course to plan for the marriage in due time. Ah Pek was 66 years old and the pretty China women was 26 years old, a women at her peak.

Few months later, both were happily married, or was it? The first night of the newly wed was as shocking for Ah Pek as the time when the China Women propose for marriage, she refuse to copulate (a high class word for making love) with Ah Pek. This goes on for months and one day the China Women disappeared. Ah Pek is heart broken but he was a lucky old man, under the influence of the China Women, he nearly sold his flat and move to China with her. If not for his growing suspicion of his wife faithfulness and intend when she refuse to make love with him, things could be more tragic than a broken heart. In the mean time, China women living else where in Singapore happily with a citizenships that she should never have got in the first place.

Before anyone of you accuse Ah Pek of been a Ti Go Pek, just give you insight that he never into paid sex in Geylang or Batam. He was single all his life and don't have much friends around, probably most have croaked. Now man do get lonely sometimes and it become even more lonely as they age. The China women is just the wrong spark at the right time to cause a wild fire in any lonely, lack of attention and CPF rich Ah Pek life. Judging from the numerous news article about different Ah Pek with different China Women, one can only conclude a pressing social problem right here among the elderly.

Most of this Ah Peks are single or wife have passed away. The cause are mainly attributed to lack of attention and care to the Ah peks around us. Without attention and care comes lonely, frustrated Ah peks becoming easy preys for the affectionate and fake-caring vultures out there. Than there is also the shortage of proper education to make them aware of cheats and swindler out there who are just out for their hard earn savings and CPF pay-out. Lastly, the lack of chances in employment in Singapore job markets means Ah Peks might not have activites to engage in and always hang-out (like teenagers) in Neighbourhood coffeeshop or Shopping center.

My dad is a frequent vistor to Tao Payoh central where he meet up with all his old friends in their 50s and 60s, chatting over coffee and tea. There are many occassion in the past where pretty China ladies and Pei Du Ma Ma often approach their group to strike a "Friendly" chat. Its a good thing that his groups pretty closely bonded like Band Of Brothers and most of them have children who keep them busy with grand-children or committed wifes. There are some who nearly got hook away but with well-mean intervention from my dad and friends, they were advised to avoid this foreign invaders like plagues. Those China Ladies are still around and my dad do spot some familiar faces now and than but they have so far never come and pester the Band of brothers after many unsucessful attempts. Talk about ill intends....

I personally believe that to prevent another episode of "Ah Pek and China Women". The very first thing is to show attention by always talking cock with your old man and also make sure he is always active despite having no job at all. I always like to discuss news on TV and papers with my dad and also family issue, a bit like parlimentary session. Also, since he was out of job long long time ago, he have always been actively engaging in home improvement from Gardening to tending the aquarium plus the maintenace of the house. Grand-children are also very good companies for them when son, daughters and in-laws are always out for work. Although tending to the grand-children could sometimes be a headache (even for the experience), they do keep the elderly occupied and bring joy to them. In short keeping the mind and body occupied with activities is one sure way of ensuring that Ah pek never feel lonely and bored. Fillial Piety from the son and daughters is the best way to it and good family bonding through show of love and care, Ah pek usually wake up to the facts that they have more important decades long relationship to maintain than engaging in a fresh new, uncertain one with some young ladies who could easily be their daughter.

Now when our society have this Ah Pek who are almost impenetrable from the invasion of China women, they will be our society best solution to fight this social problem. This new Band of Ah Pek should actively seek out those left-alones Ah Pek (those no wife, no children or no relative or friends type) and help prevent them to be next on the statistics. By keeping the other Ah Pek company, proper advise and education and getting them to join in to the Band of Ah Peks activities like Karaoke, Drink Kopi, talk cock session, exercise, RC activities.... There will be an end to those tragic episode.

** Note: I have nothing against China women but I have something agains those (whatever country they are from) who just come here to prey on our Citizenship, our Ah Peks and their money. F*** off**

Same old friends. Brand new personality and look.

Last saturday, I bump into an old secondary school-mate while window shopping at the IT SHOW 2006. She called out my name from her sales booth but I was pretty blur when she mention that she is Shi Qi. Hmmm.....Shi Qi from NVSS, seriously I only have the slightest hint of who she is. In any case, me the friendly guy as usual, strike a chat with her because she look quite "chio" and ask many many question just to narrow down the selection of secondary school girl_friends that I never met since graduating in the year 1997. Bid farewell and continue with my shopping but in the back of my mind, still pondering who exactly is that "chio bu" I just chat with. We chat for so long like long lost friend like that when actually we might not have met with each other much during secondary school time but you know what, I actually learn that she is still in close contact with couple of other NVSS friends I knew. Xiao Wei, Shan Shan, Pei Pei, Pauline (hmmm....quiet quiet one), Johnson, Jason...blar blar blar. Got invited to join in for a birthday dinner c.u.m Karaoke session to celebrate the twins, Shan Shan's and Pei Pei's birthday. Speaking of them, I think I have not seen them for ages too...

I went home and start to flip through the NVSS year book given to us before graduation. Than it struck me!!! I found out who she is!!! Oh my god, so reserve and quiet and super low profile back than and now....just look at her! 脱离苦海! and also quite chatty.

17th March 2006. Eagerly I head off to meet the girls for dinner and karaoke session. "Eager" not because that I have been told by shi qi that the twins are single but "Eager" because I will soon be leaving Singapore for two long years and could treat this like a gathering with old friends especially Shan Shan, my Sec 4 classmate. The twin are my old friends back in NVSS times and also fellow choir members. Pretty nice, reserved and quiet girls back than but now.... ha ha.... the moment I sat down beside them and Shi Qi at the dinner table, it immediately become a market. Chatty but very very sociable girls they are now, probably due to their commitment with the SOKA club and lots of interaction with others. Jolly good fun. We also have Johnson and his new girlfriend "Eedina" joining us and also Xiao Wei who currently is happily together with Derrick Chua. I concluded that all of them liked baked rice except me, eating Lame Chop (From "I am not stupid too" --Lamb chop lah!!!). Xiao Wei ordered an Ice Cream cake for the twins 25th birthday ceremony. 25th birthday cake in their life...

Birthday girls

Next came the Karaoke session. I love singing but understand how much my voice have de-graded due to social smoking and drinking (yes, its pretty damaging). Sang quite a lot of duet. Duet singing was especially fun with Xiao Wei, both of us act like we are a loving pair in the MTV...very comical. Opps...paiseh to Derrick. I must comment that all the girl are pretty good singer especially the twins, they can transform any song into a duet, taking turn to sing. Very good 默契.

Super Comical...like drama

Ladies night

A very memorable day for me to meet up with so many old friends at once and to see that all of them have change so much and for the better.

Full attendance for the day

Famous Changi Nasi Lemak My Ass!

Last saturday, Riccardo and his band of brothers head of to Changi for a one night stay at Changi Village Hotel to celebrate one of his bro 25th birthday. Who can miss out the famous Changi Nasi Lemak when they visit Changi village? Thus they decided to have lunch at Changi Village hawker center and the famous stall simply cannot be miss out among the numerous other Nasi Lemak stall within the vicinity. The long Q and the numerous sticker from local food reviewer sticker on the stall front singled the stall out.

Now off I go, very full of initiative as usual, to volunteer for the agonising 20min Q. It could not have been longer if that hungry ghost infront of him did not order 30 packets at one go. Finally its Riccardo turn to give his orders before his band of brothers die from hunger....

Riccardo: 3 Chicken Nasi Lemak please, "Banyak" Chilli (More chilli in Malay)

Stall Aunty: ...

Riccardo: (Spotting the hot steaming fried eye just out of the frying pan) Can I have those egg instead?

Stall Aunty: (Looking at the left over fried eggs on another plate) ITS THE SAME!

Riccardo: Er...Aunty, Please, can I have the hot egg instead?

Stall Aunty: (Looking Annoyed) ITS THE SAME!

Riccardo: ...

Apparently either the Stall Aunty have very limited vocabulary or she is down right arrogant and lack customer service. So why is she denying me the "fresh out of the wok" egg as though she is going lost a limb or two or her viginity if I gonna buy 6 hot fried egg instead of 6 cold fried egg? It don't seems so incovinient to scope the egg for me right? I mean the plate of hot fried eye is just beside her?

I am obviously damn disappointed to have Q more than 15min to be shown such utter unprofessional attitude and poor customer service. Even more bloody disappointed with those "Food Reviwers" sticker plaster all over the stall cause in the end the Nasi Lemak don't taste "Famous" at all.

Since the Otak have run out at this F*** up and Famous Nasi Lemak stall, I decided to patronise another neighbouring stall to buy it. The uncle was very very friendly leh, ask me if I just want to purchase the Otak straight away or I rather wait back at my seat while he re-heat the Otak and serve it to us in a while. Uncle stall have not "Famous" sticker but Uncle customer service was way way better compare to that "Famous" stall.

This bring me to a very valid conclusions....

1- Long Q does not mean good quality food. Sometimes its psychology. Would you rather eat from a stall with long Q or from a stall without? Ladies and Gentlemen, there is so many Nasi Lemak stall at Changi Village Hawker center, why don't we give other stall a chance and not be blinded by the long Q.

2- "All that Glitter is not gold" thus all the award plastered at the stall front does not mean its very good for either. On closer inspection, those stickers from "Singapore Best Food", "Yummy King" and many others apparently have been there for more than a year. Don't you think the stall owner will get a bit complacent and degrade in quality of food? And can you all just look at the way that "Famous" stall have apparently monopolise the whole Nasi Lemak market at changi village hawker center with just those stickers that other stall don't have and will never get for sure without the Q and such..... So I conclude that this stickers are not justifiable unless the stall recieve quality review annually, macham like ISO9002.

3- I don't think this "Famous" Nasi Lemak stall have any secret ingredients or what.

The rice don't taste any special,
The chicken is fried in the same way the other stall did,
The fried eggs is just cook in haste in a wok of oil and score a zero in looks
The Otah sold at the stall is purchased from supplier
The staff have noctorious attitude and poor vocabulary.

So if I were to buy over the stall, replace the whole staff and hire the nice uncle from another stall to run it without changing the stall outlook and location. I am sure the Q will still be there even if I have less coconut milk in the rice. Its all mental...

Lets just see how long the stall can survive
Please give a chance to other stall as well
Its hard to see them sweating out with not results.
